The Storm

Hurricane Dorian affected thousands of South Florida residents. Most of us prepared for the intense storm by heavily stocking up on canned, prepackaged, non-perishable food and water, in case the storm eliminated power and the means to leave the area. In South Florida, most homes and families were completely spared from catastrophe, but there is another type of aftermath that does affect individuals’ health habits.

The Hype

As many know, the media sensationalizes weather related topics, including almost every bit of information about a hurricane’s past, present and future. While it is of course beneficial to stay informed of important storm issues, it’s often at the expense of homeowners and residents over- preparing for something that may or may not affect them. Many tend to overstock on long-lasting items such as processed foods, chips, candy bars, alcohol, canned foods, pasta and packaged meats chocked full of sodium and preservatives. The emotional nature of this hoarding tends to lead to bulk buying of products  that we typically do not purchase.

Get Back on Track

After the storm passes, many are unfortunately left with an unusually large inventory of ready-to-eat foods and snacks, making it easy to grab something we usually prefer to avoid and is not good for us. Many of these foods are easily addictive and can derail any healthy lifestyle ambitions, especially if we are under stress, sedentary or simply over weight. As we gain weight from the readily available inventory of snacks and even alcoholic drinks, it becomes increasingly more difficult to make a 180 degree turn in the right direction.

Obesity and sedentary lifestyles are among the top preventable causes of death, and being aware of our eating and fitness choices can help many of us get back on track.
