To lose weight and keep it off for good, you may need to make significant lifestyle changes. This may be challenging for some, which is why developing a mental and physical support system is key to helping you reach your long-term goals while still getting the most out of life!
Benefits of a Weight Loss Support System
Research has shown that participants who enrolled in a weight loss program with friends did a better job of keeping their weight off compared to those who enrolled alone. Two-thirds of those who enrolled with friends had kept their weight off six months after the meetings ended. In contrast, only a quarter of those who attended on their own achieved that same success.
A support system isn’t just someone who cheers you on every once in a while. A support system can include someone who provides emotional support, a weight loss and/or exercise partner, or a daily inspirational message. When you are feeling discouraged, you have a shoulder to lean on. When you need someone to watch your kids so you can make it to a workout class, you have that person to call upon. Finally, an exercise partner is also a great motivator and can help you move on those days when sinking into the couch is a more tempting option.
The CardioMender, MD team also provides a comprehensive support system in that we are here to answer your questions, provide you solutions to your challenges and celebrate your successes.
Getting Support and Supporting Your Partner’s Journey
It can get tricky when talking to someone you love about weight loss. If your partner is taking the necessary steps to lose weight and you are as well, then you’re in a great position to offer your support. It is important to understand what you should and shouldn’t do when offering support to a loved one.
Ask for Encouragement and Encourage
Being told or telling your partner what they should or should not eat or what the best workouts are can come across as “nagging.” Asking for support or providing support in a non-judgemental way is often received more positively. Suggest meal planning with them and going to the grocery store together to pick out healthy options. As for getting more active, ask if they want to join you for a workout class or go for a walk in the park.
Eat Healthy Together
Eating clean is one of the most important factors that contribute to weight loss. However, when one partner is trying to lose weight and the other isn’t, it can be challenging. Going out for drinks and dinner is considered a “fun” activity to do with your partner.
Consider choosing places to dine that offer healthy options or instead of enjoying food and drinks together that are not on your meal plan, try new activities together. Hiking, kayaking, and painting are just a few activities that you and your partner can enjoy together.
Celebrate Wins in a Healthy Way
When your partner reaches one of their weight loss goals, taking them out to get greasy burgers and beers isn’t exactly the best way to celebrate their wins. Instead, show them that their efforts are worth rewarding by taking them to a new restaurant with plenty of healthy options or checking out a new city together.
Always Ask for What You Need and What Your Partner May Need
Always be sure to ask for what you need and what your partner may need from each other to succeed. While this sounds obvious, it can be difficult to know what the other person wants and needs in terms of support. Check in every now and then to make sure that they are feeling positive and doing well, mentally and physically, during their weight loss journey.
